Victims Legal Counsel Certification (Invitation only)

Military Justice

This intermediate/advanced course prepares judge advocates to effectively serve as Victim’s Le-gal Counsel (VLC) when appointed. Completion of the course is a prerequisite to performing VLC duties. Core instruction provides a program and policy overview before focusing on the roles, relationships, and professional responsibilities of VLCs throughout sexual assault and domestic violence cases. Instruction will include an emphasis on substantive military law directly related to sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse crimes as well as instruction on victim behavior, services, and medical issues. Guest lecturers discuss victim-sensitive interviewing and counseling techniques while experienced judge advocates offer practical insight into the USN and USMC VLC Programs as well as sister service programs. Participation in practical scenario-driven exercises is a substantial portion of the course.
