Military One Source (MilTax)

The Navy will open Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) computer centers for tax year 2019 income tax preparation in Region Legal Service (RLSO) Southwest and Midwest areas of operation.

  • RLSO Midwest will have one location aboard Naval Station Great Lakes.
  • RLSO Southwest will have four locations: Naval Base San Diego Dry Side and Wet Side, Naval Air Station Lemoore, and Naval Base Ventura County.

These offices will have small computer centers to access Military OneSource MilTax, Free File Alliance, or Internal Revenue Service self-help free online filing sites. MilTax Preparation and e-Filing Software will be available starting Jan. 22, 2020.

Eligibility

The MilTax software is designed for the military who have concerns about combat pay and multiple PCS moves. The MilTax program has trained Military OneSource tax experts you can talk with at no cost, regardless of your rank or income. Military OneSource offers free electronic filing to eligible service members and their family members. To include:

  • Retired and honorably discharged members and their dependents up to 365 days after separation
  • Eligible family members and survivors of service members who died while on active duty
  • Members of the National Guard and of the reserve (regardless of their activation status)
  • Designated family members handling the affairs of an eligible service member who is deployed or severely injured
  • Dependents of members separated for dependent abuse consistent with 10 U.S.C. § 1059
  • Coast Guard members serving under Title 10 authority

All other persons who fall outside the above categories, for example, military retirees and their dependents who have been separated/discharged in excess of 365 days; 20/20/20 spouses and dependents receiving transitional compensation; spouses, former spouses, and children who are victims of abuse by members who lost their rights to pay under 10 U.S.C. § 1408(h); and dependents of members separated for dependent abuse consistent with 10 U.S.C. § 1059 may use the Free File Alliance or Internal Revenue Service online programs to prepare their own federal and state income tax returns.

There are two Free File Online options based upon your income:

    Option 1 - annual income of $69,000 and below. This option permits you to select a Free File online software product that matches your specific eligibility criteria.
    Option 2 - annual income above $69,000. This option opens on Jan. 27, 2020.
