Organization

As a staff office within Navy Secretariat, the Office of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps (OJAG’s) primary mission is to support the Judge Advocate General (JAG) in providing legal and policy advice to the Secretary of the Navy. In addition, OJAG supports JAG in advising and assisting the Chief of Naval Operations in formulating and implementing policies and initiatives pertaining to the provision of legal services within the Navy.

The mission of Naval Legal Service Command (NLSC) is to provide legal services worldwide to support fleet readiness and effective operation of the military justice system. Within NLSC, Region Legal Service Offices (RLSOs), Defense Service Offices (DSOs) and the Victim Legal Counsel Program have responsibility for providing specified services to meet the NLSC mission within a given geographical area and to perform other such functions or tasks as may be requested or directed by competent authority. The Deputy Judge Advocate General concurrently serves as Commander, Naval Legal Service Command (CNLSC).

OJAG personnel support NLSC activities with subject matter expertise, resources, and oversight. Assignment of specific responsibilities for assisting CNLSC is accomplished by vesting OJAG/NLSC officials with duties pursuant to JAG or CNLSC instruction.
