The Navy JAG Corps offers summer internships and school year externships to law students wishing to gain valuable legal experience, the opportunity for academic credit, and greater insight into life as a Navy judge advocate. Due to funding constraints, only unpaid opportunities are currently available. As a Navy JAG Corps volunteer, you'll be assigned to a legal command/staff and gain experience in traditional Navy JAG Corps practice areas such as military justice (criminal prosecution and defense), legal assistance (providing general legal advice to Sailors and their families), and command services (advising military commanders and their staffs).

Who Is Eligible

To be eligible for an internship or externship position with the Navy JAG Corps, you must:
(a) be a United States citizen of good moral character;
(b) be younger than 42 years of age at time you would begin active duty if selected as a Student Program or Direct Appointment Program candidate;
(c) have taken the Law School Admission Test (LSAT); and
(d) be a law student with at least one semester of school completed (part-time students must first complete two semesters) at the time of application, attending an American Bar Association (ABA)-accredited school.

Please note that final selection and placement are contingent upon successful completion of security screening. If you have questions or concerns about your eligibility after reviewing the application and required security documents, please call (202) 685-8527.

  How it Works

Summer internships are typically full-time for 8-10 weeks at Navy locations throughout the United States and overseas, while school term externships are more flexible in duration and timing. Assigned duties and practice areas will vary by location and office.

During the application process, you'll be asked to list three Navy locations where you'd like to complete an internship or externship. If selected, you'll be offered a position at a specific location. Although every effort will be made to accommodate your location preferences, availability at each location cannot be guaranteed and flexibility is strongly encouraged. Applicants are personally responsible for making all travel and living arrangements. The Navy will not provide funding for travel, lodging, or per diem of any kind.

  Application Process

Applications and required documents must be submitted via e-mail in PDF format. Applications, to include all required documents, must be received by midnight (Eastern Time) on the application deadline.
